The first year we were in Dubai, we were all set to buy a pumpkin to carve for 27AED. Then just before we forked out the dough, we realized it was 27AED per kilo, so we would have ended up paying about $25 for a little pumpkin, so we decided to save it until Will would at least remember the experience. This year was the big year, and the parents organization at school held a pumpkin sale, so we scored this beauty for $10. Again, we also had big intentions to carve him and have the whole experience. So we started out drawing his face, and that is how he stayed...
The annual DAA Fall Costume Parade...
And finally, the big night. We got ready to head out to meet some friends from Will's class to trick or treat, Benjamin and Tuan. The only hitch in our plan was as we prepped our costumes and couldn't find Will's cape. I called Calista to make sure it made it home from school, but there was a serious communication barrier, and she didn't know the word cape, and my attempts to describe it otherwise were unsuccessful. I looked in every drawer and closet, but found no sign of it so we made a quick costume change to a Sun Devil. Nate was pleased:) - and even had on his own ASU shirt. After getting through a Finley meltdown and timeout, then a huge traffic mess, we found our trick or treat buddies and were glad we didn't give up on a fun night when the parenting got tough!
Finley got right on board with the trick or treating - she chased after the boys up to every door and caught right on to grabbing some candy from the proffered dishes. We did a lot of walking to different little neighborhoods within a larger development to find houses that celebrated our American holiday. We found one local lady who didn't have an actual bowl of candy, but went to her kitchen to find some treats for the kids, and invited us in for coffee. We declined because we were on the tail end of our adventure, and didn't trust our kids to not get crazy in her beautiful home, but she was really sweet. Benjamin's mom, Maria, had gone to the boys' class for their party earlier in the day and taught them a fun trick or treat song: "Trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good to eat. Not so big, not so small, just the size of me that's all."
