Doesn't this look way more fun than wandering aimlessly through an airport for 9 hours? I have to hand it to Nate - I was skeptical of us having the energy to pull off an hour (both ways) tube ride and quick exploration of a small corner of London, but it worked out marvelously. We rode the tube to Piccadilly Circus and then walked to St. James Park about 3 blocks from the tube station. Flocks of pigeons patiently awaited Will, and he and Finley both had a great time chasing them around.
We strolled (with pretty flat stroller tires) through the flowers, and around the ponds, and ate the chicken wraps from the plane for our brunch.
Two cute Chinese ladies wanted to take a picture with our "bootiful childs" and practice their English on us. They were adorable. And it was nice of them to ask about taking pictures instead of just doing it, or grabbing the kids from one of us.
Huge pelicans fished in vain - they just kept pulling up large sticks. Their mouths are HUGE!
Turns out Buckingham Palace is just on the other side of the park, so we joined the throngs and watched the guards march around for a bit, then lucked out and caught a royal mounted escort (missed what they were actually escorting though) as we headed back through the park. We stopped at a waffle stand and ate waffles with Nutella, while we watched the baby swans, and even scared a few squirrels with some good growls.
Yep, way better than hanging out in the airport! On our return to Dubai we have a 12 hour layover, so if anyone has any suggestions of spots we can hit in that amount of time, let us know!
Bonus - on the airport train to our terminal, we had a celebrity sighting - Randy Johnson, former Diamondbacks pitcher. I recognized him first, and we had a little conversation with his wife mostly on our train ride - he's pretty quiet, and apparently doesn't really follow baseball since his retirement. They were returning from a trip to Istanbul:)

you are much better than i am - i thin if jas would have suggested that, during a lay over - i would have put my foot down. but then look what you would have missed! love men and their adventurous attitudes!! :) glad you got to get out in the fresh air. ANYTHING is better than being in an airport for 9 hours, but your little outing looks awesome! :)
